Quantum of Solace

QoSI’ll keep this review short and not so sweet: Quantum of Solace sucked. I was really looking forward to a good old new Bond film with exciting chases, droolworthy gadgets and gorgeous Bond-Girls (or should I switch the adjectives for those last two?). The tried and tested Bond formula – always entertaining, right? Nope. What a disappointment.

watchmen posterZack Snyder first became a blip on the Hollywood radar screen with Dawn of the Dead in 2004 and subsequently rose to fame with 300, an almost literal adaptation of Frank Millers graphic novel which (together with Sin City) broke ground for a whole new kind of moviemaking. Now Snyder brings us Watchmen, another graphic novel adaptation, this time of the book that is essentially the graphic novel community’s bible. Which is why dear reader, when you go and see this film (and in this review I will try to explain why I believe you must) your should not, I repeat, NOT expect to be checking your brain at the cinema door.

Milk (2008)

MilkIn what was surely an unexpected surprise for many, Sean Penn took the Oscar for Best Leading Actor from Mickey Rourke at the 2009 Academy Awards. Biopics are always a tricky beast to bring to the screen: they either ardently stick to the historical content and risk giving birth to a dull movie, or they cut the story some slack to make it more palatable and then have the director or producer slagged off for taking too much artistic license; it’s the Catch-22 of historically-based movies. History can be hugely interesting, but that doesn’t mean it makes a great movie altogether. The story about the San Francisco-based and openly gay politician Harvey Milk clearly falls into the first category and could therefore not rock my filmsocks too much. But what an impressive story it is!
