3000 Miles to Graceland is a crime action movie, which features hundreds of Elvis impersonators. The heist in the movie takes places in a Las Vegas casino during International Elvis Week. Murphy (Kevin Costner) is the lead criminal in charge of the robbery and he has enlisted Michael (Kurt Russell) to help him and his team pull off the job. Michael has only just got out of prison and wants to give up crime and live on his dream boat. To do this though, he needs to do carry out this last robbery and get his share of the profits.
The criminals dress up as Elvis and enter a casino full of other Elvis impersonators and successfully rob the casino. This does involve a lot of shooting and killing, but all but one of them manage to leave the place alive and with bags of money. The team go back to Michael’s motel room to share out the money, and all hell breaks loose. The team of criminals make it apparent to one another that they don’t trust each other and more shooting ensues. Murphy tries to kill them all and get away with the money, but thanks to a bullet-proof vest, Michael survives and makes off with the cash. The rest of the movie is a chase between the two of them, as Murphy attempts to catch up with him and retrieve the money.
There is some fun along the way, as Michael takes some companions with him, Cybil (Courteney Cox) and her son, who both manage to touch his heartstrings and bring out his human side. Murphy, on the other hand, stays solo and keeps his eye on the goal.
The movie was entertaining, but very forgettable. There were no stand-out scenes and not enough story. The acting was alright, but the cast didn’t have a great deal to work with dialogue wise. The two main characters are both relatively quiet and conversation throughout is limited. Kevin Costner is surprising good at playing the bad guy, but it’s hard to tell at times whether he’s portraying a cold-hearted killer, or a killer with a conscience. One minute he is shooting at crowds of people and showing no mercy, and the next minute he is almost brought to tears when one of his team members is shot dead. He is charismatic in the role though and definitely the most watchable element of the movie.
