Agree entirely that Ricky Gervais is painful and embarassing, and not in the least bit humorous. Sacha Baron Cohen though is a real talent and very funny. Though many in the US still haven't forgiven him for 'Borat', and I fear that his new charcater Bruno will stir up more controversy.

Haven't seen Gervais' performance yet, but I disagree on him not being funny. Personally, I think he is a comedy genius. Not because he makes you laugh every 20 seconds with standard jokes, but because he re-invented comedy with series like The Office and (to a slightly lesser extent) Extras. His patented comedy where he makes you cringe and feel embarrassed and yet makes you laugh at the same time is quite unique. His solo standup comedy shows are also very entertaining.

It is obvious not everyone gets his humour on the other side of the pond, as they made a special US-version of The Office. I do know that he is very much admired by his American peers, so that would explain his initial success to some extent.

Humour is subjective. Ricky Gervais is funny to many people. He went over well last night and most commentators have called him a very amusing presenter and one of the few bright spots in the show.

Sacha Baron Cohen misjudged things and was in the wrong place at the wrong time with those cutting celebrity jibes.
