Golden Globes 2009: Hollywood’s Return To The Best and Worst
I generally skip watching the Golden Globes because I feel the GG are typically hokey from year to year. It could even be argued that the small amount of those who make up The Hollywood Foreign Press. But I made the exception this time, because of the nominees and due to the promise of H’wood to go all out in style. I’m not disappointed with much, just four things, really, and deals with class, or lack thereof. But there were some strong, classic moments in the event as well.
First, the bad:
*Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie ignoring Ryan Seacrest / E channel completely and going over to grant interview to Access Hollywood. Maybe they didn’t hear Seacrest- even though he started to walk towards them? No, they knew he was there. Of the entire horde of Hollywood, there’s several stars and nominees to choose from, but every celeb does the minute sound bites, and even if one granted the Q&A to a entertainment show or channel over another…a simple smile and a wave would suffice if you can’t talk to Seacrest or whomever at the moment. Sometimes the celebs just go to who is available for sound bytes. They see Seacrest with another celeb, they’ll go over to the guy with the mike who isn’t talking to anyone at that time. Isn’t that the way it works? In fact, just once I would like E! to even have interviews with some of the nominees who we may not really know. Say, one of the screenwriters, or (say at Oscars) FX guy or a costume designer. Anyone other than a few celebs who are *neither* nominees, presenters, or someone’s arm trophy. That’s just my personal pet peeve, of course. Jeers on Brad and Angelina for the snub. Jeers on Ryan Seacrest for even attempting to go after them. It isn’t worth the time.
*Seth Rogen’s drug jokes- aimed at Mickey Rourke, who had cleaned up since and won that evening. Drug jokes aren’t funny, especially those aimed at nominees (and in Rourke’s case, eventual winners)
*Sacha Bohen Cohen’s joke about Madonna and Guy Ritchie. It got the jeers it deserved. Divorce, even the nasty ones, aren’t funny. Following Ricky Gervais and his garbage made it even more unfunny:
“What did I tell you, Winslet – do a Holocaust movie, win an award … That’s the trouble with Holocaust films: There’s no gag reel on the DVD.’
Then Ricky proceeds to badmouth the HFP:
“That’s the last time I have sex with 200 middle-age journalists. Europeans with wispy beards. And the men were worse.”
Okay–Miley Cyrus’ joke bombed too. So Sacha, Seth, don’t feel so bad. But despite being “Disney Overexposed”, Cyrus isn’t a comedian and she’s in her mid teens. She gets some slack. We don’t expect Miley to be funny. Cute, maybe. Not funny. We expect Cohen to be funny and not cute. Some folks like Gevaris, want him to be funny. He’s not. See the difference? Personally, I never understood Gervais’ appeal in the first place. Someone likes him. That someone just isn’t me. Perhaps Gravis wasn’t content as a host; he was just blowing smoke because he didn’t get nominated like he had been in past years. Note to the HFP: don’t bring him back, even if you tolerate his crassness. In fact, let’s make it across the board- no crass, just class. Should be the mantra.
*Rene Zelleweger’s dress.
Well, at least on a long, far angle, it did make her look seven foot tall…
*Brian Austin Green- my favorite actor on the Terminator show- did not escort the statuesque fiancee presenter Megan Fox to the GG. Reports says she’s giving him a good ribbing over it. Not a big deal? Well, I would have spared a few hours of an evening with someone like Fox. It’s not a good practice to stand women up, especially when they spend weeks planning, days shopping, hours in a makeup chair. Half an hour an ten seconds even to throw stuff on. Just *don’t do it*
Now, for the good stuff.
*Steven Spielberg.
Outstanding award speech. Good thing about filmmakers inspiring and mentoring filmmakers. I think that bit should be YouTubed to death it was so good.
In fact: Just go here and see it!
*Chris Nolan accepting on behalf of the late Heath Ledger. While Ledger was a hit and miss actor, he was game on ‘The Dark Knight’. We all know that now. It would have been the part that would have given him better parts and more better films. He was taken way too soon.
*Kate Winslet winning for Best Actress drama and Best Supporting, for Revolutionary Road and The Reader.
*Mickey Rourke winning/his acceptance speech. He thanks the cast and crew of ‘The Wrestler’, says Darren Aronofsky is a cool cat, and then thanks his dogs- who he feels are the most loyal to him. I was impressed, really. Over half of the winners didn’t thank their dogs, cats or pet goldfish. Hardly any of hem thanked their spouses. Nobody thanked a higher power of any kind, unless that higher power was the agent. Anyway, may Rourke not piss away “his” comeback. In fact, the more I thought about it the last week, I hope those rumors of him being courted for Iron Man 2 are on the spot. If not, just to work with Robert Downey Jr on any future project. That is the kind of actor he should be working with.
*Anyone connected to the mini-series John Adams.
*Drew Barrymore.
Would you ask her out after seeing her glam? I’d give her a marriage proposal, even if I would regret it later. Some folks hated her hairdo. I kind of liked it.
*Tracy Morgan
I laughed my ass off at the 30 rock acceptance joke-speech. In fact, I pointed out the bad jokes? Here was the best jokes in under two minutes.
A list of the nom’s and winners can be found here.
What your favorite moments? Worst?
And don’t fear to pay fashion poilce!

Humour is subjective. Ricky Gervais is funny to many people. He went over well last night and most commentators have called him a very amusing presenter and one of the few bright spots in the show.
Sacha Baron Cohen misjudged things and was in the wrong place at the wrong time with those cutting celebrity jibes.
Comment by tt — Tue January 13, 2009 @ 6:38Haven’t seen Gervais’ performance yet, but I disagree on him not being funny. Personally, I think he is a comedy genius. Not because he makes you laugh every 20 seconds with standard jokes, but because he re-invented comedy with series like The Office and (to a slightly lesser extent) Extras. His patented comedy where he makes you cringe and feel embarrassed and yet makes you laugh at the same time is quite unique. His solo standup comedy shows are also very entertaining.
It is obvious not everyone gets his humour on the other side of the pond, as they made a special US-version of The Office. I do know that he is very much admired by his American peers, so that would explain his initial success to some extent.
Comment by paco — Tue January 13, 2009 @ 23:45i didn’t think Mickey Rourke would ever show up in public again, then there he was, winning big at the Golden Globes
Comment by coffee — Thu January 15, 2009 @ 8:13Agree entirely that Ricky Gervais is painful and embarassing, and not in the least bit humorous. Sacha Baron Cohen though is a real talent and very funny. Though many in the US still haven’t forgiven him for ‘Borat’, and I fear that his new charcater Bruno will stir up more controversy.
