Road To Victory (2007)

Road to VictoryIt’s my nature to want to support independent film makers. It’s tough to get your film noticed, getting some praise on the film festival tour is quite an accomplishment. So it was with a predisposition to want to like this movie that I agreed to review it for CoP; unfortunately I quickly discovered that I was really not the person to be writing this review. Looking at the DVD cover I thought, “alright, we’re going to get a relationship film with the backdrop of American Football.” Instead this film quickly turned into an ABC after school special on erectile dysfunction.

Disturbia (2007)

DisturbiaI’m not sure I’m the right person to review this, as I’m not really a thriller/horror fan. Going to see the new Saw movie just isn’t my idea of a fun night out. I do however like thrillers like Arlington Road and this movie covers the middle ground between those two. Oh heck, I’ll have a go…

Skinwalkers (2007)

Skinwalkers While I will admit there may have been some small potential with director James Isaac when he helmed Jason X a number of years ago, it seems his latest effort, a sort-of werewolf movie Skinwalkers got hacked up by a different kind of machete. I’m not sure why the distrubutor chose to slice out the bits and parts that would have made the film the original R. A plan to go unrated when the DVD hits shelves? Maybe. But I’m going to take a wild guess in that much of that excised footage helps fill in some interesting but major plot holes.

The Simpsons Movie (2007)

the simpsonsmovie On the theme of impending eco-apocalypse, The Simpsons Movie (2007) is yet another summer flick with a social conscious at it’s core. Yet what separates this film from the TV show? Why should you pay money to go see it on a big screen? Well, because it’s a really good movie.

sunshine2007In the middle of a heatwave, what better film to go see than a movie about the sun exploding. Director, Danny Boyle, of Shallow Grave (1994), Trainspotting (1996) and 28 Days Later… (2002), brings us his journey into the vastness of space in the sci-fi thriller, Sunshine (2007). Get yourself a cool drink because it’s going to get mighty hot in here!

The Downfall of Elvis’ Acting Career

Filed under: — Helen on August 9th, 2007 03:08:59 pm

elvis-in-blue-hawaii.jpgElvis Presley films are generally not taken seriously. They rarely appear on anyone’s list of top ten favourite films. The only people who would probably admit to watching them would be hardcore Evis fans, who would watch anything containing their idol. People without any interest in Elvis generally choose not to watch his films. This is because his films are very much lacking in artistic credibility. They are merely star vehicles that were only ever intended for commercial success, rather than to be taken seriously. The majority of them lack credible plots, credible actors, and most of them even lack credible music, as they included songs of the calibre of ‘Old Macdonald had a farm’.

Smallville Season Four (2004–2005)

smallvilleseason4poster.JPGWhile the 3rd season of Smallville felt like a step back, the 4th season gets the series back on course. Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar take their biggest creative leap from the original sources with the arrival of Lois Lane. Played by Erica Durance, this version of Lois Lane is more spunky, cynical and independent than previous incarnations. Like a great sixth man coming off the bench, Durance brings a raw energy and new life to the series.

Ratatouille (2007)

ratatouilleposter“100% computer animation, no motion capture involved” is what it says on the end credits of Ratatouille. This being Pixar’s latest installment, it is easy to see why they are so adamant. The newest Pixar tells the (100% animated…) tale of Remy, a Parisian rat aspiring to be a Chef. Aided by the ghost of the great French cook Gusteau (a pun on the French word for taste) and the very corporeal kitchen-help Linguini, Remy just might get what he is after. After the obligatory hurdles are overcome of course.

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

Filed under: — Darren Seeley on August 5th, 2007 02:08:01 am

Bourne Ultimatum I’m not exactly sure why the third film in the Bourne film franchise decided to call itself The Bourne Ultimatum, as the film itself has absolutely nothing, not even in essence to the third Bourne novel written by the late Robert Ludlum. In fact, it may just be a simple selling point, for the studio could have called it The Bourne Shaking Camera or The Bourne To Be Wild and it wouldn’t matter. The film is so jam-packed with well paced, manic action that at times I found it to be overwhelming. The film’s greatest strength is also its biggest weakness.
