Saw the Donner version and I cannot say that this is the better version. Maybe if Donner had the opportunity to complete the movie we would have seen a more balanced plot. Although I haven't watched the two versions back to back to make the best comparison, I can see that Donner focused more on the relationship between Lois en Clark. Donner did this at the detriment of the action sequences, adn though it's more of a character study, Superman is also about the action.

I can understand that Donner feels vindicated and I will watch it again with his commentary, but I cannot say that this really added to the version of Lester.

The Richard Lester film, which has more Donner footage than originally promoted (in fact, Lester had taken credit for the diner scenes; but Donner has a walk on cameo in them; all of Gene Hackman's scenes were filmed by Donner- Lester used a stand in/double) has been available on DVD for some time; a recent re-issue Special Edition was released with a box set.

The Donner cut was released on DVD this past week in conjuction with the recent Singer film. It is also included in the new box set and sold individually. I don't see a reason why the Donner cut would only be released in the US and Canada. It's possible, but unlikely. Keep an eye out for it.
