Lord of War (2005)
Based on the hilarious trailer for this movie, containing semi-nude girls with guns parading on the wings of a military aircraft, I was expecting it to be a rather dark and sarcastic comedy. Instead it turned out to be a movie about a man who ‘runs’ guns like most smokers smoke.

King Kong (2005)
Despite having seen the truly horrendous 1976 remake by John Guillermin the other week, I was eagerly looking forward to Peter Jackson’s remake. It was the 1933 original that inspired Jackson to become a director (even though I have a feeling the stories about his first encounter with the big ape are increasingly romanticized). This 2005 version, besides state of the art special effects, would be far more true to the original. It is set in 1933 and for those of you familiar with the first King Kong, it is full of joyful and clever nods to the original. But is this one, starring an all-CGI gorilla any good? Yes it is. And I’ll tell you why. Beware: some spoilers ahead.

A Sound of Thunder (2005)
Time travel has always been one of science fiction’s premier themes. Between Back to the Future and The Butterly Effect, all aspects of the concept seem to have been explored on the white screen. And still this movie manages to cover new ground. That however does not mean it’s very good.

Serenity (2005)
After my recent discovery of Firefly, the sci-sfi television series that got cancelled by Fox only to gather a cult following, I just had to see this movie. Luckily it’s been released here in the Netherlands, unlike the series on which it’s based. And it’s been a while since we’ve been able to see a sci-fi movie this good on the big screen. Serenity is fun. It has many of the elements that made the original Star Wars movies so cool, plus a few of its own.
