Breakfast on Pluto (2005)

breakfast on plutoThis latest offering from director, Neil Jordan, transports us back to the 70′s in Ireland and London. We are introduced to one of the most memorable characters of this year’s film offerings, who has, perhaps, one of the best lines as well. Patrick “Kitten” Braden asks the question: “If I wasn’t a transvestite terrorist, would you marry me?” After seeing Breakfast on Pluto (2005) many people might say yes.

Inevitably the temptation to compare Breakfast on Pluto (2005) to another Neil Jordan film, The Crying Game (1992) which also featured a strong transvestite character (Dil, played by Jaye Davidson), was set against the backdrop of the Northern Ireland conflict and had a terrific soundtrack. This is, however, where the similarities, pretty much, end. Breakfast on Pluto (2005) is largely a homage piece to those tough transvestites who, armed with razor sharp wit, battle the forces of the all too serious world.

Cillian Murphy, has increasingly gained exposure in Hollywood, with roles in films like: Batman Begins (2005) , Cold Mountain (2003) and 28 Days Later(2002). With his lead as Patrick “Kitten” Brady, he’s sure to gain greater notice. For many young actors it may seem like a risky role to take on, yet despite the controversial nature of playing a transvestite, the character of Kitten is allowed to develop and reveal her complex layers. While watching Murphy on screen, one feels the spirit of the immortal Mae West being invoked. The character of Kitten continually states that she is named for Saint Kitten, an unknown saint and the product of Patrick’s imagination, certainly the character of Patrick “Kitten” Brady is bound to become a patron saint of sorts to transvestites everywhere.

Patrick “Kitten” Brady (Murphy) grows up in a small Irish town. It is the public secret of he town that he was conceived by an affair between the town priest (Liam Neeson) and the housekeeper (Eva Birthistle) who all say bore a startling resemblance to 1960′s musical star, Mitzi Gaynor. In his obsession to find his mother who had run off to London, Kitten meets a range of characters and experiences London life of the 1970′s.

Breakfast on Pluto (2005) is a wonderful period piece which will thrill anyone interested in the retro style of the 70′s. The soundtrack is strong and the atmosphere is spot on.

Loves the big screen experience of sitting in a dark room with about a hundred strangers all getting sucked into the fantasy realm beyond the silver screen.

  • A riot of colour and characters, it is a charming and funny film. Cillian Murphy gets it SPOT ON as Kitten, and towards the end it is impossible to think of him being anything other than female.

Patrick “Kitten” Brady is such a loveable character: an innocent abroad, a romantic and a dreamer who stumbles in platform shoes and flares through life in search of his mother and love.

This film is not only funny, it exposes the hypocricy and ruthlessness of politics in border county Ireland in the 1970s.

  • This is an amazing performance by Cillian Murphy who transforms into this whimsical Kitten and becomes her. Viewers only see and feel for her painful and hysterical journey through life to come out victorious as she does in the end. I loved this film to no end…best performance in 2005. Cillian’s amazing performance should be recognized. Why is he still under the radar?

  • Thoroughly enjoyed myself with this one. I was in awe of Murphy’s performance. I did nto like the addition of the Norther Ireland conflict. I understand it was kinda inevitable, but it also seems to be Neil Jordan’s thing to include it. It removed some of the spirit of the fairytale structure and the harsh violent scenes did not feel right.

  • I wonder how much money Jordan has made from his shoe line? Probably in the billions!
