I could not agree more!
I have always been a Joss Whedon fan (Buffy in particular, Angel to a lesser extent) and to me this is Whedon for grown-ups. Like you say, it is witty, well acted, well directed (I love the way some shots of Serenity flying are deliberately out of focus).
Unfortunately when this series was aired by the Fox Network they f...ed it up monumentally! They skipped the pilot episodes (they were aired when the decision to cancell the series was already made) and messed with the order of the other episodes, thus spoiling a bunch of running gags and the flow of the story (like the one with the compression coil; you firefly-freaks now what I'm talking about).
Have to say though: I like nathan fillion as Mal. This actor can go from hero to whimp in 0.5 seconds, and that is just what makes his character interesting.
Brilliant also is the swearing, which is in Manderin-chinese. Thanks to this series I can now say: "froghumping son of a bitch" and "mind your own business" in chinese. Just for that, I am gratefull Firefly came into my life.
To me this is televesion at it's very best.
