Dust To Glory (2005)

By a technical standpoint, Dana Brown’s documentary “Dust To Glory” captures the thrills and spills of the annual Tecate SCORE Baha 1000 racing event, which covers a thousand miles through the desert of northern Mexico. Loads of cameras, lots of juicy footage of bikes and varied modified vehicles going through not only rough terrain, but also into parked trailers and nearly into the local racing fans. There were shots from mounted cameras with cars going 100 mph or more where bystanders have to get out of the way or suddenly get instant flying lessons.

Flightplan (2005)

I am not too familar with the past few films from director Robert Schwentke, but despite Hollywood’s reluctance to release those acclaimed films in the US, I do think ‘Flightplan’ could change that, and I do look forward to more films from this skilled director. While the film takes a few minutes to get going, once it goes, it involves the audience to ask the right questions, and there was a time while watching this film, I thought this film would go one thought provoking way, and it went another.

Daredevil (2003)

Two different versions of Daredevil- the version shown in theatres, or the director’s cut, which restores thirty minutes of subplot? Which one is better? Why is it that in both versions the playground fight scene is still a joy to watch while being really stupid for being there in the first place? Lots of questions, but still a few satisfactory answers.

Dalecarlians (Masjävlar) (2005)

Filed under: — Arjan Welles on September 18th, 2005 12:09:38 pm

Dalecarlians (or Masjävlar in Swedish) is yet another entertaining Swedish film, after the stunning As It Is In Heaven (Så Som I Himmelen), that even got an Oscar nomination for best foreign film. In Dalecarlians, we see Mia (young, attractive, went to college and made it big in Stockholm) drives off to the region of Dalecarlia to celebrate her father’s 70th birthday. Once there, she is presented with her background and the huge differences she has developed with her sisters. When the night of the celebration arrives, a plethora of held-back emotions and frustrations is about to surface.

Land of the Dead (2005)

Filed under: — Arjan Welles on September 18th, 2005 11:09:02 am

George A. Romero sort of (re)invented the modern take on zombie movies. Although he was not the first director to bring the undead to the screen, he certainly set the standard for modern zombie cinema, with the first instalment of his zombie-trilogy, Dawn of Dead in 1978. This film is a defined classic; people will never ever look at shopping malls the way they used to. Last year a rather entertaining remake hit screens worldwide. Dawn of the Dead was followed by two more titles: Day of the Dead (1985) and Night of the Living Dead (1990), each film representing a decade. Although set up as a trilogy, Romero decided to add another instalment, representing the new decade, called Land of the Dead.

Fantastic Four (2005)

Perhaps the bad rainstorm on the “Fantastic Four” movie premiere should have been taken as an omen. It’s not like Fox and Marvel had been given fair warning, however. For a long time, the big budget FF film had gone through writers and directors, in an attempt to get the FF in a ‘sitcom’ mode. It simply didn’t work. What area would Tim Story take it? It seemed that despite the wonderful “Barbershop” there was that God awful “Taxi”, there was still some hope. Despite an okay job, bottom line: don’t get your hopes up.

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose (2005)

Filed under: — Darren Seeley on September 17th, 2005 06:09:44 am

While the US advertising focuses more on the horror angle of “The Exorcism Of Emily Rose”, some people may be surprised to find out that it is more of a courtroom drama, with the horror stuff told both in flashback and, it seems the evil forces in question also haunt the principal characters through paranoia and suggestion. I was surprised also, but even more so that both the legal thriller and the horror element works rather well. There is also no clear answer to the questions raised, allowing room for not just a jury, but an audience, to make up thier own minds.
