Blade: Trinity (2004)
When this third instalment came out, I was rather sceptical about it. Not that I didn’t like the previous two Blade movies – because I did – but more because I felt that the Blade formula had worn itself out. Wesley Snipes created a cool character, but him slaying all the big vampires and thwarting their big all-conquering schemes could not last forever. This movie should then become the magnum opus as he takes on the big kahuna himself: Dracula, freshly awaken from his ancient grave. Sadly, this movie turns out to be more a magnum painus in the assus.
Initially, I didn’t deem this movie worthy of a review, but when I read a review that was actually positive about this third Blade movie, I felt I had to set things straight. Also, when I learned that Snipes had a ‘hell’ of a time on the set – with the emphasis on hell – a couple of things fell into place for me. This movie shouldn’t have been made as it disgraces the previous two. Snipes was very clearly struggling throughout this movie and the story was as ramshackle as an old tool shed. According to some gossip, Snipes was at war with screenwriter and director David Goyer, stating that his Blade character didn’t get the exposure it should’ve gotten. I wouldn’t be surprised if that were true, since Snipes’ performance was flaccid and uninspired. His presence in the movie becomes a bit questionable since much of the focus of the story is turned away from him, while it is still he who has to save the world. Apparently, Snipes refused to do any promotional work for this movie and clearly stated his disgruntlement after the movie was finished.
This time, Blade teams up with a vampire-hunting group called the Nightwalkers, which holds one of Whistler’s forgotten daughters in their ranks. They battle it out against a group of vampires who have resurrected the patriarch of their kind, Dracula. From here on, the plot becomes very clouded and shattered, fumbling from one poorly shot action sequence to another. Blade’s role is downplayed to that of mindless vampire-slaying muscle and the Nightwalkers try to introduce a hip element to the movie (together with a lot of annoying and blatant product placements. Blergh!). It has been rumoured that the Nightwalkers could get their own spin-off movie, which would imply the end of Snipes’ vampire-slashing days. If they ever decide to undertake such an endeavour, they then have to work on those abysmal dialogues and terrible plot holes. Much of the dialogue that was uttered by the Nightwalkers’ funny guy, Ryan Reynolds, was so irritatingly unfunny and so out of place, that it became very painful and unsettling to watch. Nothing is as painful as a movie that tries too hard and fails all the harder.

I really hated Blade II, since it was full of utterly nonsense slaughter…

Good thing Kill Bill I was so subtle…
Comment by Paco — Tue January 11, 2005 @ 2:50I agree with your review on the whole, but kinda dissagree with you on Ryan Reynolds. His part was definately the best written and I thought he delivered it well. Cock-jugling thundercunt has in fact now become my new favorite swearword!

But Snipes was appalling, Christofferson wooden, Biel redundant and the vampires annoying instead of scary. I liked the dogs though….. Notice how I’m not mentioning the plot. That’s cause I couldn’t find any.
This is sort of a movie for rainy sunday afternoons, when you have nothing better to do. It beats chewing glass, although not by very much.
