Stage Beauty (2004)

Filed under: — Arjan Welles on December 12th, 2004 04:12:27 pm

Stage Beauty tells the story of 17th century English Shakespearian theatre, in which all parts, the female ones included, were played by men. After an illegal, but dashing performance by Maria (Claire Danes), King Charles (Rupert Everett) decides to allow women on stage as well. Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) strongly opposes this new law. First of all, because he is a star of women’s parts and sees his position threatened. Secondly, because Maria is his former assistant.

Based on the famous play by Jeffrey Hatcher, Stage Beauty has it all: amazing performances by the crème de la crême of British stage and screen actors, a witty, fast-paced script and a genuinely breathtaking final scene. All scenes are constructive and shed most of the clichés seen elsewhere. Much better and less light-hearted than Shakespeare in Love, Stage Beauty approached perfection.

Arjan Welles - law graduate. I work at a bank, I work as a film critic for Dutch and English media. My favorite directors are David Lynch, David Fincher, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino. I love arthouse over blockbusters.
