This is a strange movie. Not only can it be seen as a sequel to two series of movies, it’s also based on a video game. Lastly, it follows a long standing tradition in comic books to have the heroes battle it out in “vs.” editions. This movie brings together the sci-fi baddies from the Aliens line of films and Predator 1 and 2.

Trembling Before G-d (2001)
In the run up to the 2004 U.S. Elections, the Republican campaign is focused on their commitment to get same-sex marriages (and if possible abortion) banned by amending the Constitution. They feel that marriage between a man and a woman is the only moral way and that same-sex marriage actually undermines heterosexual marriage. Their viewpoint is not so different from most Orthodox Jews as we see in this moving documentary by Sandi Dubowski.

Audition (2000)
I am becoming a huge fan of Japanese/Asian horror films. I like the subtle and slow, eerie pace and the way the story is built up to an all-devouring climax. I have seen quite a few good ones over the past year and lots of them are about to be remade in Hollywood. Films like Ju-On, Ringu, Dark Water and The Eye (in fact, that one is actually from Thailand) provide a great source for Hollywood – who ran out of ideas ten years ago. I heard a lot about Audition (Ôdishion) by Japanese director Takashi Miike, who was also responsible for Ichi the Killer and, more recently, Zebraman (review soon). The press was in shock after Audition. So was I. It starts off as a rather simple drama, goes through a phase of a mediocre thriller and ends up being an unalloyed horror movie full of gore.

Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003)
I didn’t like the first Charlie’s Angels much, but to my surprise I loved Full Throttle, even when seeing it twice in two days. Perhaps I was in a better mood to appreciate the outright silliness and action-extreme than I was when watching the first one. Or perhaps it really was better?
