Nick of Time (1995)
What were they thinking when they cast Johnny Depp to play the lead role in this movie? His character is an accountant and a dad. No need for boyish charm, nor for Depp’s teenage hairdo. Not that his performance is bad, he’s just so very out of place.
When Gene Watson (Depp) steps out of a train after having visited his wife’s funeral he and his little daughter are met by what seem like police officers. They kidnap the kid and give Watson a gun. He now has two hours to kill a female senator who’s speaking at a nearby hotel, or his daughter will die.
An interesting start, but I thought it all went downhill from there. To keep Watson from talking to the police, he’s constantly surrounded by people who are in on the plot. Especially “Mr. Smith” (Christopher Walken), who’s there at his every turn. Every time Smith has to step in, he’s basically covering up another plot hole. And since he’s always there, why doesn’t he kill that woman himself? He has plenty of opportunity. His co-plotters even point out at some point how “one high-powered rifle would have done the trick”. They’re right.
Except for the original idea this movie has little to offer. Nice to see Gloria Reuben outside of the ER for once though. I’ll rate it ** (out of 5).
