Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

Filed under: — paco on November 7th, 2003 02:11:51 pm

Nemesis_poster.jpgI chose to write this review not because this was such a great movie -it was probably the weakest Star Trek-movie of the lot- but because to me it marks the end of an era. Although Star Trek has continued after The Next Generation, it never got any better than this series with its original story lines and enigmatic cast. This should be their last motion picture. I used to be quite a fan, but from now on Star Trek has lost its appeal to me forever.

The Quiet American (2002)

p_quiet_american.jpgI haven’t watched any movies in a seriously long time and I was more than a bit hesitant to make this one my first. I usually think Brendan Frasier is a real dolt and I’ve never really liked Michael Caine (which is probably seen as sacrilege by some.) It’s not that I think Caine is a bad actor, I just sometimes find him painful to watch since he has always seemed like a lecherous old man to me. But as turns out, both of my preconceptions only helped these two actors become the ideal casting for this particular movie.

The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

Filed under: — Arjan Welles on November 6th, 2003 11:11:11 am

MRev0.jpgFour years ago we witnessed a true revolution in modern Western cinematography with the release of The Matrix. It combined modern digital techniques (of which some were of a totally new nature), with Eastern martial arts. And it was highly influenced by comics and Japanese manga. At the time The Matrix was released, the makers, the mysterious Wachowski brothers, announced this was the first in a trilogy. In May 2003 the centerpiece The Matrix Reloaded saw the light of day and made clear the initial movie could not be surpassed. Now the time has come for the last installment: The Matrix Revolutions. Thank God we did not have to wait yet another four years. Yet that might have been a wise decision: a better plot would have been worth the wait.

The review contains spoilers, in the sense that it gives an opinion about the plot of the trilogy. If you don’t wish to know too much about it, go see the movie first and then read this review. I won’t tell you how the movie ends; I will just give my vision on the ending… these ‘spoilers’ are in the last paragraph of this review.

Dirty Pretty Things (2002)

Filed under: — Arjan Welles on November 4th, 2003 02:11:16 pm

DPT0.jpgDirty Pretty Things is a movie about people who refuse to be a victim of their circumstances. Dirty Pretty Things deals with love, fear, desire and total numbness towards human dignity. Dirty Pretty Things is the final proof that Audrey Tautou is ‘ber-adorable as an actress, of which Am’lie was exhibit A. Dirty Pretty Things touches, impresses, grabs you by the throat and is a small movie that deals with huge things. Finally, Dirty Pretty Things is one of the most charming little movies I’ve seen this year.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Texas ChainsawFinally, almost 30 years after it came out, I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a group of friends on Halloween. What a magnificent 80 minute cocktail of horrendous acting, sickening slashing and some great shots.
