Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003)
This animated feature written and directed by Sylvain Chomet, combines the traditional drawn images with computer generated ones that makes this film a pure visual smorgasbord. An international production from France, Belgium and Canada; it uses a minimum of dialogue but a maximum of sound for beautiful and entertaining results. It has not one, but two fabulous chase scenes and loveable characters you will take to heart. It is animation with a capital “A” as in art, but big and little kids will still enjoy it…
The plot itself is not overwhelmingly strong, but it really doesn’t need to be. That’s not what this film is about. Though a story line does exist, the strength of this movie is in the vignettes which allow the animators to simply focus on the individual characters. The clue to this is given right at the beginning of the film with a highly entertaining musical number that pays homage to the early “Merry Melodies” animated shorts of the 1930′s. At the heart of the story line is the moving tale of the love and devotion of a grandmother for her grandson. There is a lot of humour and I found myself laughing out loud in the cinema ( I wasn’t the only one ) throughout. The feel good factor is very high and you’ll want to stay for the end of the credits just to hear more of the contagious soundtrack.

AMAZING! I am a huge animation fan and I absolutely adored the humanity in the characters… That grandma is just so sweet with those big eyes behind glasses.
I also loved the use of CGI that was very well dosed… and the scene with the ship and the stormy sea was breath-taking.
I hope it will get some Oscars (although I think Finding Nemo will get one) and the theme song is nice but gets a bit annoying after hearin it a zillion times watching the extras and all…
(BTW: the original title is: ‘Belleville Rendez-Vous’ in case you can’t find the title anywhere)
