Rules of Attraction (2002)
So after reading Suzero’s review of Less than Zero, a movie I remembered liking from the 80’s, I decided to watch the latest the Brett Easton-Ellis inspired movie. Thankfully the movie seems to be set in the present day so there is no 1980’s fashion, but other than that it seems like all the same themes are repeated. Poor little rich kids with too much money and time on their hands. Was that all that existed in the 80’s?

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Hollywood has been throwing mediocre sequels at us for a while, so I was surprised to see a pirate movie on the menu. Considering how big a flop the last one, “Cutthroat Island”, was, it’s a miracle this movie got made at all. This was the only movie I had heard good things about this summer, so I had high hopes when I went to see it last night.

What the Stars think
Back in 1984, journalist Wim Kayzer put a bunch of respected thinkers together to let them ponder about life, the universe and everything. The interviews, called ‘Een Schitterend Ongeluk’ (A Glorious Accident) was shown on dutch TV as a series of bite-size talkshows. So, once more, the dutch had something to whine about. Pompous and pretentious programme, but nice hedkandy. And we got to see what a handful of scientists would blab about when they get paid for it. Ok, we know about scientists, journalists, politicians, firefighters, schoolteachers. But what about moviestars?

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)
In the mood for a summer blockbuster action packed movie I considered some of the films on offer, but was led towards the second in the Tomb Raider series when I realized the Jan de Bont (director of the action classic Speed (1994) as well as cinematographer on Die Hard (1988) and Basic Instinct (1992) ) directed this feature. So I headed down to the local Cineplex; making sure to check my brain at the door…

Beep beep! Beep beep!
The idea behind this site is to let people know what we think about movies. I just read an article about how SMS is used to do the same. Hollywood is blaming kids with mobile phones when asked why this summer’s movies attract less moviegoers. I think it’s wonderful how modern means of telecomunication can affect things like that.

Paltrow as Plath?
Who thought this was a good idea? Gwyneth needs to stick with comedy-light (i.e. Shallow Hal, Tannenbaums, etc.) She can’t act for crap. And could they at least have lessened the insult by dying her hair something OTHER than blond?

Less Than Zero (1987)
I am probably one of the few people that never saw this film in the 80’s and I was really looking forward to a drug-ridden, brat-pack, 80’s teen movie. What a disappointment.

The Pianist (2002)
Although I have an inexplicable and totally unfounded dislike for Roman Polanski (possibly something to do with a dirty old man stigma), I have to admit that he is responsible for some particularly well made movies. Many of the Polanski films I have seen and liked (such as Rosemary’s Baby and Bitter Moon) were seeped in mystery and twists and turns, but the Pianist isn’t like that at all. It’s much more of a straightforward, yet horrifying story.

Fame Academy (Deux)
Fame Academy on BBC has recently begun it’s second term. With the “who wants to be a pop star” reality TV genre bringing stiff competition, they have nastied up the format this year and thrown in a few TV twists that have not left the public singing a happy tune…

The Animatrix (2003)
According to the Wachowski brothers, you won’t be able to fully understand the Matrix unless you see all three movies, play the “Enter The Matrix” videogame, and see “The Animatrix”. The second movie added very little to the Matrix universe, so I wasn’t expecting much from this collection of short films. Some great animation maybe, but nothing shocking… Well, I was wrong!
