How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
After recently seeing “Maid in Manhattan” and “Just Married” I normally wouldn’t have joined my wife to go see yet another romcom. But this one had some better reviews, making me believe I wasn’t going to see another “replay with different actors”. I wish I would have stayed at home…

Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002)
This is one of those films that has lushly beautiful cinematography, but I found I could barely concentrate on that because the plot was so moving. It’s based on a true story and portrays a disgusting period when the Australian government would forcibly take mixed race children from their aboriginal parents. It seems like one of those things that historically you know happened, but to see it actually depicted is truly heart wrenching. And the shocking part to me was that apparently this took place until as late as 1970!

Down With Love (2003)
Three thumbs up for Down With Love this hilarious homage to the Rock Hudson & Doris Day flicks of the 60’s. Accompanied by the infamous Ladd sisters of Brooklyn all three of us loved this charming spoof that offers luscious costumes, kitsch-o rama sets and a delicious twists on the boy meets girl theme.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
I used to be a big fan of Harrison Ford when I was younger. Not so much because of his acting abilities, but because he’s played so many great characters. He must have had quite a bit of luck to end up playing not only Han Solo, but also the second coolest hero in movie history, Indiana Jones. The BBC showed the third installment, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” last night.

S1m0ne (2002)
This interesting movie got very little attention in The Netherlands when it came out. Usually, that’s not a very good sign. But this movie has Al Pacino in it, and it’s sci-fi-ish. More then enough reason to rent the DVD and see for myself whether this is an undiscovered treasure or best left on the bottom shelf at the video place.

The Scorpion King (2002)
Last night was “Eurovision Song Contest night” at my house. Luckily, a friend called and invited me to escape and go rent a movie instead. In return his wife would join mine in watching europe’s most horrible music. Because the mood was set for mindless entertainment, we ended up renting “The Scorpion King”.

Treasure Planet (2002)
Disney seems to have spent the last couple of years trying to renew their formula for making brilliant animated feature films. Their fairytale song-and-dance thing got a little outdated, and other companies, most notably Dreamworks, have moved into Disney’s field. “Treasure Planet” is clearly one of those films where they tried to do things differently.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
A better title would have been The Matrix Overbloated since it’s jammed packed with bad acting, over used special effect, ridiculously lengthy fight scenes and a dance party sequence that will make you want to get up and leave the cinema. In fact the only thing it isn’t jam packed with is a story…

25th Hour (2002)
Spike Lee continues his reign as top New York-o-grapher. He has set his story with the back drop of a post 911 New York and has done this is a very stark and accurate way reflecting the soul searching and frustrations that have obsessed every New Yorker since that fateful day. Amidst this we get a strong story about people and the emotions that motivate them. It’s about choices, responsibility and possibilities. It does all this without being a redemption story…

Courage Under Fire (1996)
My wife and I agreed to babysit our friends’ daughter last saturday evening. After we put her to bed we found ourselves in their living room with nothing to do and a rather big TV. “Courage under Fire” was on, and since I’d read good things about it we decide to watch it. After all, just about any movie is better than surfing channels for two hours…
