Spiderman (2002)

Filed under: — suzero on February 6th, 2003 12:02:45 pm

spiderman.jpgJust watched my newly acquired DVD of Spiderman. Enjoyed it, especially the first half where he discovers his spidey powers and wears pyjamas.

Have come to the conclusion that although I prefer Superman artwork (or is it his costume I prefer?), Spiderman is much cooler. Just living in New York City rather than Metropolis makes him cooler to start with. Plus Spiderman has a more wry sense of humour (especially in the comics) than Superman.superman

But then Superman can do better stuff. Lois Lane is better than Mary Jane, but I prefer Tobey MacGuire over Dean Cain. Superhero poetry!

Looking forward to Harry’s (Son of Green Goblin) revenge in part 2!

  • Much like with Men in Black (part I), I almost found it a shame that there was an enemy for “Spidey” to battle. In MiB, the part where Will Smith joins up this great organisation is the best part. The stuff about fighting this big lizard form hell (well, outer space) is such a Hollywood must-have. It distracted me greatly from the story about Will getting adjusted to the fact that there are indeed aliens, and they’re all around us.

I liked the part where Spidey finds out about his powers tremendously, but I didn’t like the Green Whatshisname. Didn’t like the artwork, mask, impossible vehicle, etc.. He put too much Batman-style nonsense into an otherwise pretty down to earth (no pun intended) movie. would have been content with Spidey beating up rapists and muggers for the rest of the movie, and seeing how becoming a celeb affects him… that kind of stuff.

  • I agree with you 100%. Green Goblin must go. I love all that “Spidey saves the day” simple stuff. Also the scene at school with the lunch tray and the slo mo / matrix type shots during the fight with Flash.

  • He does of course save the day this way, and in a bigger way, which is probably why they did it this way.

  • What about all the ‘swooping around’ and ‘dangling’. Maybe I see too few action movies, but I’ve never seen it like this before. Way cool.

  • I liked this movie but not that mutch. There are 2 things i didn’t really like.

    1. In the movie spiderman looked like a wuss. If you read the comics you’ll notice that spiderman isn’t such a dork in real life. Also in the comics when he is spiderman, he usually makes funny coments. However that didn’t happen in the movie.

    2. In the comic, the web was shot from some fluid he created and was attached on his wrist in small container. However, in the movie he shoots the web from his wrist too but it comes from inside his body. This is actually better than in the comic but if you make it the same at least make everything the same then.

I hope they will also make another movie featuring Venom and Carnage as ennemies.

    Just my 2 cents…

  • Yeah, but they never said the movie was the same as the comics. In the comics he gets bitten by a radioactive spider. Now in the 21st century it’s a genetically manipulated spider.

Personally I like him being somewhat of a dork in real life as it makes you (well, me) feel like I too can be a superhero if I happen to get bitten by a bug or land on earth from Planet Krypton – even if I don’t have a high “cool quotum” or biceps to start with ;-)

  • I just watched Spiderman AND Superman on DVD again – both fantastic, but for different reasons. (Incidentally Suzero, surely you should reference Christopher Reeve not Dean Cain re. Superman. After all, Reeve’s Superman is definitive.)
The Making Of indicated, from interviews with people like Sam Raimi and Stan Lee, that they had tried to be as true to the comic as possible, but obviously had to snip, change and evolve with the times ie. the genetically manipulated spider, rather than the dated radioactive one. Actually, there’s a lot of that in adaptations and sequels – like in Terminator 3, where they (almost) seamlessly integrated the previously-unmentioned Internet into the ultimate rise of the machines.

  • You’re absolutely right, Geet, Christopher Reeve is essentially Superman, more so than Dean Cain. I also love Margot Kidder MUCH more than Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane.

Does anyone know about the supposed jinx on actors in Superman series/films? There’s Christopher Reeve’s tragic (and let’s face it: ironic) accident and Margot Kidder was apparently found trespassing in someone’s Beverly Hills garden, babbling and no longer quite sure of who she was. I think there are more similar stories but don’t remember exactly. Teri Hatcher’s career perhaps? Hmmm… that’s obviously jinxed too but I think she did that all by herself.

  • Can this Jinx be contagious? Will actors from Spiderman, Daredevil and Batman be struck?

  • i have heard this superman jinx. Apparently the superman of the 50′s (think black and white film of a guy with a very soft looking body) died tragically.

  • Here’s a Superman discussion group thread about the jinx… but not much news there. More research is needed.:

  • Peter Parker WAS a geek in the comics! Sure he had a dry sense of humour the the whole idea about Peter Parker was that he was a geek who was in love with the Girl Next Door. The powers he got from the Spider allowed him to blossom and reveal his true potential!
As for the film, I think it’s great, although the Green Goblin’s mask is horrible and although it’s great the first time round – the last hour is basically Spidey/Green Goblin running around blowing thigns up and fighting each other. But it’s still a good film.

Spiderman 2 looks ace – my favourite villain – Doc Ock!

  • This movie was a huge let-down to me. The swinging from buildings was just too fake (very, very poor and obvious CGI) and the story wasn’t too great either. The comics are way better.

The sequels could introduce The Fantastic Four and we could even have Spidey team up with the X-Men (which he gave a good whuppin’ in the Secret Wars). The FF could then spin-off in a movie of their own. In the second I would’ve have preferred to see Dr. Doom; the quintessential villan.

The Secret Wars would make a great superhero Trilogy, though :)

  • There is a Fantastic Four film in pre-production at the moment. The director keeps changing but apparently it’s definitely coming. Personally, the Fantastic Four were always my favourite comic characters.
