Die Another Day (2002)

halle berryBest bond ever. Really. It could almost have been a great spy movie.

DaD starts out really great. I’m not a big bond fan, and seeing him finally get captured and being tortured was great :) But seriously. I found the first half an hour quite entertaining, and it really gave Bond some depth. But after that they started going overboard again.

dieanotherday2.jpgAs soon as Bond is released from captivity, the movie starts getting more and more unbelievable by the minute. I know a Bond film is not to be taken seriously, but with a start like this one the contrast is too obvious. I guess I just don’t like Bond as much as I like more realistic spy movies like “Spy Game”.

dieanotherday3.jpgBy far the best special effect in the film was Halle Berry btw. Man I can look at her forever… go see this movie if you feel the same way :) You can see she has a modeling background from the way she moves though. Even when she’s kicking someone’s butt it’s all just a little too stylish/feminine/ouch I broke my nail :)

All in all an exciting movie if you’re willing to go into “suspended disbelief” after the first half an hour. Great swordfight somewhere half way through, an Aston Martin “Vanish”, more oneliners than in Arnold’s entire career and a Korean with diamonds in his face :) What more could you wish for?

Rating: ***1/2

  • Halle Berry used to be a man you know. That’s why it’s even more admirable that (s)he manages to move so femininely!

  • Yeah, and I heard Barry White was a woman around the same time, and they were married.

  • Tribute to the first bond girl or X-file?
Ok, it’s in swedish. At least the Swedes dare do the obvious. Put both on the same page:

  • I don’t think it was a secret anyway that this scene was a “loving quote”, but it’s nice to see them on one page. Tnx.

  • Finally saw this film and thought it was so-so. I have enjoyed other Bond films more. I was never a great fan of Halle Berry’s but I must admit that she was beautiful in this film. A little too much swaggering of the hips here and there though.

I agree with Weefselkweekje that within the realm of the “unbelievable” this film goes too far in unlikelihoods and impossibilities. What also bothered me was the apparent (over) use of computer generated backgrounds. Were they too cheap to really go and film in Iceland for the wide snowscape shots?

Nah, give me Diamonds Are Forever any day.
